Perfect Duck Skiing Weather

Looks like today is going to be the warmest and wettest we’ll see with this warm patch we’re having – it’s all downhill from here.  Tomorrow day will be cooler, although still wet, with snow making temps returning to the northern resorts and those at higher elevation Friday night and Saturday night for everyone else.

Despite the warm temperatures and wet, the slopes are holding up pretty good.  Just take a look at Snowshoe yesterday.

A look at the snow reports and cams and you’ll see that all of the open resorts have good coverage.  This is not to say however that they have not taken a hit.  Both Sugar and Ober lost 2 inches of base in the past 24 hours, and Wisp is reporting a loss of 4 inches.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I almost titled it All is Quiet on the Southeastern Front (I’m kinda proud of coming up with that one).  That could very well be the title to today’s post, but this is just the calm before the storm as this weekend things will be kicking back up and there are some really cool events on the horizon.

I mentioned earlier that Appalachian Ski Mountain is celebrating their 52 year anniversary Saturday and Sunday with day lift tickets for $5.  App is also hosting the Burton Riglet Park Tour on Saturday.

Ober Gatlinburg is getting in on the action and having Christmas on Ice Saturday and Sunday.  So despite the warmer temps, winter is alive on the mountain!

I personally took the opportunity this week to put the skis in the shop for a little tuning to make sure I am full and ready for the weekend and next week.  Looking at the long-term forecast on weather.com for the North Carolina High Country shows a solid return to winter next week with snowmaking temps every night and day highs in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.  Looking at the same 10 day forecast for West Virginia shows that the temps will struggle to get above freezing – period.
