Winter Storm Advisories and Watches All Around

11.25.13 09:38 AM

Much of the mid-Atlantic and Southeast Mountains are under alerts ahead of Winter Storm Boreas, which is expected to move into the area tonight.  The West Virginia resorts have been issued a Winter Storm Watch from 10AM Tuesday – 1PM Wednesday, with snow accumulations, “in excess of 6 inches possible!”  The Northern North Carolina Mountains are under a Winter Storm Advisory from 2AM – 12PM on Tuesday, with snow accumulations up to an inch in the higher elevations.  Move farther south towards Cataloochee and Ober and you’ll find a Freezing Rain Advisory.

Our very own Herb Stevens updated his West Virginia forecast on Saturday, which you can listen here if you missed it.

The below normal temps we are seeing in the area are making for some really good snow making conditions.  We were about 20 degrees below normal yesterday here in North Carolina – our high yesterday was below our average low for the day.  Just about all of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast resorts took advantage and made snow again last night.  This enabled Sugar Mountain to open another run today – the Magic Carpet Area, and Cataloochee to open to 3/4 today.

Appalachian Ski Mountain has decided on Wednesday, November 27th for their opening, Snowshoe Mountain is also opening on Wednesday. Beech Mountain and Massanutten are both targeting Friday, November 29th, while Wintergreen Resort is looking at Saturday, November 30th.  It looks like all the resorts will be in fine shape for their respective debuts. Wolf Ridge chimed in yesterday predicting a Thanksgiving weekend opening.  If I’ve missed any opening please let me know!

On to what you can expect today as you head to the slopes

Sugar Mountain

Sugar is making snow again today and you can bet that they will all day.  They are reporting an 8-36 inch base, up 4 inches from yesterday.  Sugar is operating from the top today on Northridge, Switchback, Upper Flying Mile, Lower Flying Mile, and the Magic Carpet Area.  The yellow lift and magic carpet will take you back up the hill.

Catalochee Ski Area

Cat is making snow today and like Sugar it would be a safe bet that they will all day. They are open from the top of the quad (3/4) with 9 runs - Rock Island Run, Alley Cat, Lower Snowbird Trail, Lower Omigosh, Upper Over Easy, Over Easy, Rabbit Hill, Easy Way, & Beginner's Luck, with the quad, beginner's triple, and conveyor helping you get back to the top.  They are reporting a 22-40 inch base, up 8-10 inches from our last report.

Enjoy!
