Fall Begins Today at 10:29pm. Bring on the Festivals!

09.22.14 08:37 AM

It is a beautiful start to Autumn as the temperature here at our office this morning is 47° with chamber of commerce, blue skies. Autumn actually, officially begins at 10:29pm this evening and at about that same time things will begin chilling on down to lows perhaps into the upper 30s overnight tonight and Tuesday night.

According to Weather.com expect a mild end to September and a Warmer than Normal OCTOBER.

We're in for some unusually hot temps as we go into the last week of September but we'll enjoy this taste of Autumn for this week. It seems that we ALWAYS get one more burst of very warm temps in October and this year will probably be no different.

I was up in Blacksburg this past weekend and it was crazy how the tips of a lot of their maples and oaks were already turning yellow and orange. I saw more hues of Fall on my drive through Damascus, Virginia on the way back home on Sunday afternoon.

With the leaves changing, major league baseball's regular season coming to an end and college and pro football entering week FOUR of their seasons - you what's around the corner, right?

Here are some of my favorite things about Autumn:

1. The colorful leaves floating the gentle breezes. They fall to the ground creating a blanket of rustling fun to walk and play in.

2. White girl coffee. Okay I don't DO coffee, but my wife and daughters do and Starbucks just ramped up their offerings of Pumpkin Spice Lattes recently. For many people it seems that their first sip of Pumpkin Spice Latte signals the onset of the fall season. How's THAT for some smart marketing?!?!

3. Fall Festivals. In addition to the Valle Fair and Woolly Worm Festivals small towns across the mountains host their annual Fall Festivals. The Hilltop Fall Festival in Rutherfordton, NC is always a great one and this year it falls on October 4th. If you want to get back to your old-fashioned roots...or begin some for YOUR family - plan to take in one of these events and you'll know-doubt make a return trip annually.

4. Oktoberfests - Okay THIS is just another name for Fall Festivals - but they are not your stereotypical fall festivals where there's a bunch of bobbing for apples, etc. Oktoberfests tend to be full of bands, beer, brats and fun...not that bobbing for apples isn't fun.

All of the ski resorts tend to host their own version of Oktoberfest. Sugar's is Saturday and Sunday - October 11th and 12th this year.  It's a great way to take in the peak colors of Fall and get the Joneses for skiing and snowboarding.

In closing - Autumn is ALSO that time of year where weather predictors start releasing their winter forecasts. We'll monitor as many as possible and pass ONLY those favorable for lots of snow and cold temps. JUST KIDDING - we'll share all of those that we know to be reputable.

Weather.com recently released some October-December forecasts that seem to contradict those recently put out by Joe Bastardi.  As we get a little closer into October, we'll share more.

Until then ENJOY the day and the week ahead. Email me at mike@skisoutheast.com with any comments, story suggestions or just to say "hi".
