Happy Hump Day! We’re halfway through the work week and several ski areas continue to be open for business across the region. Conditions and the number of trails that are open aren’t what we’d like them to be at this point in the season, but it is better than nothing!

Mike’s wife stopped by the office this morning and we were talking about the current conditions around the region. I mentioned how last year at this time I had already had two bluebird powder days at Beech. Two years ago was a similar situation. What a different season it has been so far this year. Right now I have 6 days of riding under my belt and while they have been a lot of fun, but I think I’ve gotten spoiled over the past few years with the early season powder conditions. Riding so far this year has felt more spring-like which is cool because spring riding is fun, but I like to have those type of dates when it is actually spring, not December.

The weather has been toying with the ski areas so far this year. We’ve already seen a couple resorts push back their scheduled opening days and I have a feeling we’re going to see that happen once again this weekend. Canaan has twice moved back their date and now they plan on opening December 22nd. Winterplace was/still is planning on opening this weekend and they had November 17th posted on their site. This morning though, they have changed their tune a bit and their site is simply saying opening soon.

If you do make it out to ski or snowboard today, it will be a spring like day with soft snow. I was out at App once again last night and the snow has softened up considerably from the night before. That’s not a bad thing because when I fell while riding park it didn’t hurt as much. Just a quick note, App now has two parks running. Appaljack and Appaljam are both open with a number of features. There is stuff up for beginners, intermediate riders/skiers, and experts. It is a really good setup out there right now.

<<< For it being so early in the season and having only limited snowmaking opportunities, App has a really good park setup right now.  Conditions in general are awesome out there!

It does look like most of the ski areas will see a brief window of opportunity to make snow this weekend. Saturday and Sunday nights should be cold enough to allow for snowmaking again. The northern West VA resorts could possibly even have the guns going around the clock on Saturday. So if you are planning on riding or skiing this weekend, I would suggest Sunday as it looks to be the better day with sunny skies and some fresh manmade snow. Unfortunately, in between now and then it looks like some underdeveloped snow will make an appearance once again. Ugh. This roller coaster weather is killing me!

As I mentioned at the opening of this article, several resorts do remain open today. Nothing has changed since yesterday and the same resorts and trails remain open. App, Cat, Sugar, and Beech will all be open for business here in North Carolina. Snowshoe in West Virginia and Massanutten in Virginia are also open again today. I’m not going to go over each resort this morning since nothing has changed over the last 24 hours, so check out the Ski Report page for a detailed list of what’s open and what’s not.  Talk to ya tomorrow!
