Don't Let the Weather Get You Bummed! There's Still Plenty of Snow to Enjoy!

02.24.11 09:11 AM

Good morning folks! Hopefully the dreary weather isn’t bumming everyone out too bad this morning. There is underdeveloped snow at most of the regional ski areas and it’s going to continue to be that way for the rest of today and tonight. As I’m writing this, I can hear the rain on the roof here at work. It’s coming down pretty hard right now. While it’s kind of disappointing, it is also a good thing. We haven’t had a lot of precipitation lately and are already in a deficit for the year. So we definitely needed a good soaking like this.

<<<App this morning.  They definitely have enough snow to last another month.

With the recent mild temperatures and lack of wintry weather, I’m sure some people are beginning to wonder how much longer the resorts can hold on. The topic has even been discussed on the messageboard. To that I say QUIT WORRYING AND GO RIDE! Conditions are still really good at all the areas and we have probably four more weeks of skiing and riding here in the Southeast. While some of the resorts will most definitely close up shop before then, there will be the usual few who make it to late March. So quit thinking too much into it and get out on the slopes and enjoy it while you can! It’s always a long summer.

Here’s the Snowshoe Summit portion of the morning! Like I said yesterday, I’m probably going to remind you guys about it every morning until it gets here next weekend. Conditions will be great up at the Shoe and it’s an opportunity for everyone who is on the messageboard or frequents the site to meet and greet with one another.  We’re going to be having a get together on Saturday night at Moonshine so make sure to be there for that! The Cuervo Games of Winter will be taking place all weekend so there will be plenty of festivities going on with that both during the day and at night. If you haven’t booked yet, you still can do so and take advantage of the discount lodging and free Sunday lift passes that Snowshoe is offering. Just make sure to use the code SkiSoutheast when you call them. Also, if you have already booked and made your reservation, email me at with your address and confirmation code please. You can also PM adm1n on the messageboard. We are trying to get everything in place and confirm all of our attendees with Snowshoe.

So that’s it for today. Here are the resorts…

Ober Gatlinburg - 48° - Open on 8 of 9 trails today with a groomed surface. The day session begins today at noon and they will be skiing and riding until 10 pm tonight. Tubing and skating are also open today.

Wisp Resort - 40°- Open on 31 of 32 trails today with Bobcat Bowl being the only one not open. Today is Season Pass Swap Day where you can bring a 2010/2011 season pass from anywhere else and receive an extended day lift ticket for only $21 or a night ticket for $15. It is also McDonalds Day where you can go to any participating McDonalds location to receive a voucher for discounts on lift tickets as well as rentals, tubing, and ice skating tickets. I like how they have a lot of promotions every week. It’s pretty cool.

Snowshoe Mountain - 30°- They are open on 59 of 60 trails today and they rebuilt their terrain parks yesterday. Here’s what they have to say - "We've been getting lots and lots of questions over the last week or two regarding snow conditions, forecasts, etc. We can go on and on about how the snow is still in great shape, there's plenty left, it's good skiing and riding, etc, etc, but we think it means a whole lot more when fellow paying guests share their on-snow experiences. So today we're going to let our customers do the talking. These are some recent comments from our Facebook fan page. All posted in the last day or two. For many more, be sure to "Like" Snowshoe Mountain Resort on

Ethan Joseph Melton: The snow today was INCREDIBLE! Clear and wonderful day, tons of powder! No crowds or lift lines and I'm amazed at the conditions. Couldn't get any better

Cheryl Lynn Pan Sroufe: Kudos to the snow making and grooming team at Snowshoe!!! I had a full day of awesome riding conditions. Soft, carvable, powder like - just how I like it. My husband and I were very impressed on the condition and what your team could do after all that rain and no snowfall. This was our last day and I hate that I have to go home and get back to work.

Missy Wiggins Tysinger: Yes, plenty of snow up here. Great day on the mountain today. Got in 5 hours of skiing. No lift lines either! If you aren't here, you are missing out!

Shann Ferreira Unbelievable. Skiing was so great today. The slopes were as good as they were after all the snow in January. Hats off to Snowshoe Resort. They sure know how to work magic on the slopes. So all of you thinking about a trip, get packed and get up here. It is wonderful!

So there you have it folks! Hopefully some of those comments can convenience you of what we've been saying all along; 4-10 FEET of snow isn't going anywhere any time soon. We build up a sustainable base in order to weather normal freeze/thaw cycles throughout the season, and we've seen fewer of those cycles this year than in a "normal" year, which is GOOD. We made snow overnight Tuesday, and we hope to do the same Friday. We're committed to having the best conditions possible through the end of the season! There's still plenty of time to come up and enjoy these conditions yourself!

We groomed everything last night and three of our 5 parks got special attention throughout the day yesterday, so they should be looking sweet this morning. We do have rain in the forecast the next two days, so we'll be looking at soft, heavy snow.”

Canaan Resort - 37°- Open today on 37 of 39 slopes with a frozen granular surface. Cross country and snowshoeing are closed today, but tubing and ice skating are open. Also, today is Heroes Day Thursday. Lift tickets and rentals for all military, firefighters, EMS, or police officers are half price with a valid ID.

Timberline - 37°- Open today on 37 of 39 trails with a groomed surface for the most part. I think it’s cool how they are reporting that they groomed about 76% of the trails. The backcountry is still open as well. They have a Telemark Festival Workshop on Saturday too if that’s your thing.

Winterplace - 36°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed and granular surface. Both of their terrain parks remain open and tubing is also open today.

Bryce Resort - 33°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface and they will have night skiing tonight. Tubing is also open today at 6pm.

Massanutten - 35°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface. Both terrain parks are still open with a number of features set up. Tubing is also open today from 9am to 9pm.

Wintergreen - 38° - Open today on 25 of 26 trails with a groomed surface. They will have night skiing tonight, and tubing will open at 2pm today. This weekend is their final Freestyle Doublecross event and you can also meet pro skier Tyson Bolduc.

Appalachian Ski Mountain - 39°- Open today on all 12 slopes with a wet granular surface. Ice skating is also open today. They have a promotion right now where you can buy next year’s season pass and ski and ride for free for the rest of this season. That’s a pretty cool deal.

Beech Mountain Resort - 40°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a wet granular surface. This Saturday is the 3rd Rail Jam at Beech and here is what they have to say about it – “The popular Under Armour 3rd Rail Jam, a tour that showcases some of the best in snowsports, will make a stop at Beech Mountain Resort on Saturday, February 26. Featuring slopeside graffiti art, a freestyle MC bunker battle, hip-hop music and the winner-takes-all rail jam, the event will take place at 3:00 p.m. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m . The rail competition has four different divisions, 15 and under, all girls, best of the breed and skiers with prizes given out in each group. 3rd Rail’s nonprofit partner this year is Amped4aCure, and of every registration fee will go to this beneficiary that supports cancer research through music.

After watching or competing in the events, an after party featuring New Jersey rapper Timmy Grins and DJ Image will take place at 9:00 p.m(21 and up). Grins, a rapper who has dedicated much of his time and music to battling alcoholism after strugglingwith the disease for years, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in November of last year. Grins will speak about his journey at Lees-McRae College on Thursday, February 24, at 7pm.”

Cataloochee – 42.4°- They are open on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface today. Tubing is open as well. This weekend is Fire and Rescue Appreciation Days, offering discount lift tickets to fire and rescue personnel and family. Very cool! They are also going to be having their BIGBIGBIG One Day Season Pass Sale on Sunday, March 6th. Pass prices will be the lowest of this year and next and if you are a new pass holder you can ski and ride for free for the rest of this year! Also, just a reminder that it's Learn to Ski and Snowboard Season at Cataloochee and with the purchase of rentals you get a free 1.5 hour beginner lesson.
