The Blowing Rock towers 4,000 feet about sea level and overlooks John’s River Gorge. Boasting unparalleled views of the peaks of the Blue Ridge, this rock has long been associated with Native American legends. It is said that, many years ago, a Chickasaw chief brought his daughter to the Blowing Rock area to keep her safe from the white man. While in the care of a squaw mother, the young woman met a Cherokee brave. The two fell in love, but eventually, the brave had to leave for battle. The young woman begged him to stay, but, according to the legend, the young warrior was so torn between his duty to his people and his duty to his lover that he jumped from the Rock. The maiden prayed continually for his return until, one day, the young brave blew back up from the spot where he had jumped. For ancient peoples, this legend explained the strong winds that blow up onto the Rock, which cause even the snow to fall upside down.
