What a weird morning it is in terms of temperatures across the region. I had to scrape frost off of my car this morning as it was pretty chilly. The sign on the Echota building read 29 degrees as I was coming down 105. I come in here and begin to do the ski reports and the temperature readings are all over the place here in North Carolina. Appalachian Ski Mountain was showing 47 degrees. I thought that was wrong for a second. I then checked to see what Beech was and they were showing 50 degrees! That is 21 degrees warmer than here in Foscoe, which is a good 2000 feet lower in elevation. I was at Beech last night and it was in the mid 30’s, so temperatures actually rose a good 15 degrees overnight. Can you say inversion?
In general, the ski areas here in North Carolina and at Ober in Tennessee the ski areas are mainly showing temps in the 40’s this morning. Wolf had 31 degrees but they use The Weather Channel for their weather and I’m sure the weather station on there is not actually close to the resort. I’m betting it’s somewhere lower in elevation and down in a valley. Our station on High Country Weather is showing 46 right now, which is much more accurate and actually located right near the ski area in the housing community there. This is why we try to get the resorts to invest in these weather stations, so you get much more accurate readings!
The Virginia and West Virginia resorts are mainly in the upper 20’s to around 30 degrees this morning. Snowshoe and Wisp were actually able to make snow overnight. I guess the other places saw borderline weather conditions that really weren’t conducive to snowmaking.
<<< Wisp is looking good this morning after they were able to make snow overnight.
It’s going to be another nice day to ski and ride everywhere. More sun is in store for today and temps will be comfortable, as highs should get at least into the low to mid 40’s for everyone. Yesterday looks like it was a fun day judging by pics I’ve seen and from what I saw on the webcams.
Massanutten posted this pic from yesterday on their Flickr account. Looks like it was a fun, spring-ish day up there!
If you can get out there today, I’d highly suggest it because tomorrow and Friday look to offer less than ideal weather conditions. Unfortunately, more underdeveloped snow is in the forecast. I’ll leave it at that.
The good news is that colder weather returns for the Saturday and Sunday. Snowmaking will resume once again and things should turn around pretty quickly over the course of the weekend. Here is the NWS weekend forecast for Beech, Bryce, and Snowshoe.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.

Sunday: A chance of snow. Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23.
Saturday: A chance of snow showers after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 33. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Saturday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 15. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 16.
Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 34.
Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23.
As you can see, if you’re planning on getting some turns in this weekend you should be fine. As has been the case all year, the West Virginia resorts will be the best choice for skiing and riding in the region. However, everyone should have some pretty good conditions as the underdeveloped snow will be a distant memory once snowmaking starts up again. We just have to get through bad weather tomorrow and Friday first!
