Christmas may have come and gone, but the slopes are still in the giving mood. And the best gift the slopes can give us, of course, is snow and good conditions upon which our bases can glide. We can safely say that the area resorts have recovered from the warm spell (and that’s the last we’ll mention of that) and are well on their way to opening the remainder of their terrain.
Taking a tour of the resort cams this morning shows a lot of life at the resorts. Just about all of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic resorts were pumping out the snow fast and furious as of 7:00 this morning.
Early Snowmaking at Sugar
As Mike mentioned in his Christmas Eve post, this is a crucial time of the year for the resorts as a good chunk of their revenue comes in between Christmas and New Year’s. Mike also mentioned that the mountain ops teams would be stepping it up as the cold returns so they can maximize the temps and the holidays. Well, he could not have been more right as just about all the resorts are either reporting adding to their existing bases, opening terrain, or both. WIN-WIN no matter how you slice it.
The big jumps in the amount of snow laying down on the ground come to us today from Appalachian and Sugar, who are both reporting adding 6”+ to their bases in the past 24 hours, and Wolf Ridge who added 5”.
Beech, Wintergreen, and Wisp all added about 6” of their own AND all opened up 3 additional runs. Beech opened the black diamonds Upper and Lower Southern Star. Wintergreen reopened terrain that they had to close with Tyro, Tequila, and Sunrise. Wisp is now running on 23 of 32 slopes – about ¾ open.
Beech Mountain this morning
Cataloochee continues to open terrain back up and is now skiing on 14 of their 17 runs. They opened up 2 more runs after their morning report yesterday and are threatening the same today. We’ll keep you updated as new runs come online.
It is going to be another great day on the slopes today. You will see mostly blue skies at the southern and lower elevation resorts. Wisp, Snowshoe, and Winterplace are all expecting some snow flurries today before the clouds break up.
The cover photo today is from the Canaan Valley View cam at around 7:00. Here it is again around 8:00. Shaping up beautifully.
Highs today will range from the high 20’s to the low 40’s. I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but today is going to be another amazing day. I’m jealous for all of you who are out there today enjoying the snow.
