MORE TRAILS OPEN! NICE CONDITIONS FOR MLK SATURDAY! MORE WOLF POOP SPOTTED!

First Trax

Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

As you know, we've been "tracking" this mysterious "Wolf" and there are some signs in the snow this morning. But first –

Want to see what amazing snowmakers; great snowmaking technologies; AND LOTS of snowmaking equipment can do? Simply check the snow reports for today.

The slope conditions look so bright I gotta wear my tinted ski goggles! This weekend's weather could not be much better for the MLK crowd in attendance. Highs in the 30s and low 40s and overnight lows cold enough to make snow in the teens and 20s. Sunny skies and very nice conditions! Thank you Lord!

There's some MORE speculation and rumor floating around the "Wolf scene" as the WolfNC.com has made a reappearance. You'll have to read on down this morning's BLOG to get the latest. Local mountain residents and business owners are chiming in via emails to me overnight. I just don't know what to make of it just yet.

HERE'S THE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF:

CANAAN VALLEY RESORT: 13 of 42 Trails, Terrain Park, Snow Tubing and Ice Skating
Canaan made snow yesterday and conditions look great today. They announced, "The longest tubing hill in the Mid Atlantic is NOW OPEN! Featuring eight, 1,200' ft. long lanes, a magic carpet, and a warming hut. Evening sessions are offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and holiday Sundays."

*** Not sure of the status of the LIVE cam going in there. David Vance and several of the Canaan team were literally moments away from going live on Friday. They were using a skylift in the middle of the slopes to install the cam and last I heard it was close to going LIVE. Kenny???

SNOWSHOE MOUNTAIN: 43 of 60 Trails, Terrain Parks, Snow tubing, Snowmobiling
Conditions look great at Snowshoe with the overnight snowmaking in the last 24 hours. They have SNOW in their forecast for early in the week and the most terrain open in the region. We have no word on the three LIVE CAMS that are supposed to be going in over there.

MASSANUTTEN RESORT: 7 of 14 Trails; Terrain Parks and 10 lanes of Snow Tubing
All we can say is wow. Mass added a couple of reopened trails and the conditions look awesome for today even though they saw borderline snowmaking ops overnight. Tubing looks awesome as well and you can see a lot of the mountain from the LIVE Streaming cam here> http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-massanutten-base.php

Mass has a Free Burton Riglet Snowboard Tour Today ages 3-6 from 2:00 -6:00 pm

WINTERPLACE RESORT: 22 of 27 Trails, Snow Tubing
Winterplace simply looks like a post card today. Check out the LIVE CAM at: http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-winterplace.php

APPALCHIAN SKI MTN: 10 of 12 Trails; 3 Terrain Parks & Ice Skating
Not sure I've EVER seen App with a base of 12-22" this deep into January, as they are usually measuring 100" by now, however things look great and with all but two trails open today it will be a great time to take a bite out of all of the delicious sounding slopes – Appaltizer, Candied Appal, AppalJack, AppalJam…get it? I don't know, I thought that was kind of witty. Thing DO look quite snowy at App this morning per the cams. See: http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-app-ski-mtn-live.php

You'll notice we updated the snow total from App on Friday AM as we received some inaccurate snowfall data. App ended up with closer to 6" of snowfall.

…awesome shots from the Beech Slopeside Cam!

BEECH MOUNTAIN RESORT: 12 of 15 Trails; Terrain Park and Ice Skating
I like the word that Beech is using this morning – "Winterfull". That is what the conditions look like on the slopes and via the LIVE STREAMS. Beech has everything open with the exception of Upper Southern Star, Upper White Lightning and the Oz Run. Last season White Lightning was only open for a VERY small time and I'd expect the rest of those trails to open prior to next weekend. Going to "the Beech" should be awesome this weekend. A foot of snow and great snowmaking does wonders for the soul, doesn't it?

One of my favorite cams is now the Beech Slopeside Cam. Check out some of the AMAZING views from that today!

WISP RESORT: 25 of 32 Trails, Ice Skating, Snow Tubing, Terrain Parks, Mountain Coastering and more.

Wisp looks velly, velly nice this morning and conditions should be awesome with additional snowmaking that happened overnight and this morning.

TIMBERLINE RESORT: 17 of 40 Trails Open and Snow Tubing
Timberline reopened several trails and conditions look very nice up there for today.

CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA: 9 of 17 Trails, Terrain Park & Snow Tubing
Cat looks great this AM and they TRIPLED their open terrain from Friday this morning. They will make snow as long as temps allow.

OBER GATLINBURG: 3 of 9 Trails, Snow Tubing and Ice Skating
Take a ride on their aerial tram to see some awesome snow shots today. Can't believe that we don't get more of those kinds of photos from you guys. John Cossaboom emailed me that Ober was able to make snow for a little bit this morning with the borderline temps. Things DO look so much better after some snow making and 5" of natural snowfall.

SUGAR MOUNTAIN: 15 of 20 Trails; Terrain Park, Snow Tubing and Ice Skating
If you guys could have seen Sugar Mountain late on Thursday just before the snow began to fall you would not believe how great it looks this morning. Massive snowmaking and 10" of snow cures a lot of evils. Big Red is back open and that in itself is simply incredible.  Check out the Sugar Mountain Streaming Cam at http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-stay-sugar-mountain.php

THE HOMESTEAD RESORT: 4 of 10 Trails and Ice Skating
I'm really liking the new Homestead cam: http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-homestead.php

The Homestead has DOUBLED their trail count today and things really look nice after  3" of snow and some snowmaking. We're not seeing the snowguns running this morning despite the cold 20° readings this AM.

WINTERGREEN RESORT: 13 of 26 Trails, Snow Tubing and Terrain Parks
They wrote, "Great snowmaking conditions combined with 6+ inches of natural snow will allow us to open more terrain over the weekend.  Upper Cliffhanger, Lower Wild Turkey, Sunrise, Tequila and a portion of our Terrain Park will open today.  Tyro, Lower Diamond and more Terrain Park Features should open Sunday.  Keep checking this report for the most current slope information, we will be adding terrain FAST!  How fast?  We plan to be 100% open by next weekend!"

BRYCE RESORT: 5 of 8 Trails; Snow Tubing
Bryce had borderline temps to deal with but DID make snow overnight and they've reopened one trail and now have 5 of 8 trails open. The slopes look good and will only get better. No reports of thin coverage or bare spots so the weekends looks great!

WOLF RIDGE RESORT: 6 of 22 Trails and Tubing
Several reports that the 6" of snow reported by Wolf on Friday AM was more like 3" and CoCoRahs from atop Wolf confirms that. However, we're giving them the benefit of the doubt because that snow packed down quickly across the entire region and the photos we received sure looked like more than 3"! Some of you guys are being a little tough on Wolf.

NOW MY TURN…KIND OF…

All I can say is "good grief" the drama! WolfNC.com is back. However it is no longer reporting that there is a "NEW OWNER" of the resort, but that it is a "New Mountain, New Management, New Experience!"  The website is BACK UP albeit minus the PRESS RELEASE about it being owned by new peeps. We're guessing a deal was struck that allows the once reported new owners to be "new managers". I'll believe it when we are able to speak to this new management. I have hundreds of emails in my INBOX from area residents and business people who want to SEE some differences.

Very few people on planet earth even know about the WolfNC.com website AND most importantly it doesn't even include a snow report OR the live cam images of the ski slopes, etc.

The "OLD" website reports NOTHING about new management and has the same 6 slopes the had open on Friday. There was NO snowmaking and weather.com reports an inaccurate temp of 23° this morning prompting MANY of you to email us asking "WHY NO SNOWMAKING?" However the actual temp this AM was 31.6° and there's a strong chance that it was just above the wet bulb temp needed to make snow.

I'm not buying the new Wolfie thing…but we'll see.

SAPPHIRE VALLEY: 0 of 2, Tubing Open – call ahead
They have not updated their snow report except to say "call ahead". The info we received was that the snow tubing hill should open today and the ski slopes on Sunday. They ARE making snow this morning.

Enjoy your day if you're fighting the huge crowds today and send us some photos!
