Getting Back to Normal

The temperatures are getting back to normal.  I hope everyone made it through the vortex OK.  The temps across the resorts this morning were generally in the mid-20s to mid-30s.  The highs today will range from the high 30s to the high 40s and there will be plenty of sun.  Today is the day to get out and enjoy the copious amounts of snow that the resorts have been pumping out.

Just about everyone has added to their base in the past 24 hours, some pretty significantly.  Cataloochee has added 10” to ski on 52-66”.  Appalachian is reporting up to 74” and Sugar claims 85” on the high end.   Wolf, Massanutten, Wintergreen, and Winterplace all added to their bases as well.  The guns have been firing in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic at a feverish pace for sure.

No shortage of snow at Cataloochee

In addition to the huge amounts of snow, we have 2 more resorts that are 100% open today.  Cataloochee has opened up their terrain park and is skiing and riding on everything they’ve got.  The Homestead is the other mountain to open it all up this morning.

Beech is getting very close themselves with the opening of one of my favorite runs there, the diamond Upper White Lightning.  Beech now has 14 of their 15 runs open and just lacks the Meadows.  Wintergreen has reopened the runs they closed down earlier this week to concentrate on the making of snow and is skiing on 22 of their 25 runs with the addition of the diamond Upper Sunrise.  Sugar has opened their terrain park and just lacks the blue Sugar Bear and the diamond Boulderdash.  Sugar has upgraded their summit camera, which now has a wider field of view and pans to include some spectacular view of the surrounding mountains.

And speaking of cameras, you really should take a look at the various resort cameras at resortcams.com today.  While you’re there, be sure to check out some of the non-resort cameras as well.  The mountains, as always, are just stunning.

I hope you guys get the opportunity to take advantage of what the slopes have to offer today.  Great snow and weather will welcome you.  There is talk of a chance for more snow tonight from Wisp on down to Cataloochee.  The North Carolina resorts might see a bit of underdeveloped snow in the form of “Freezing Drizzle”.

Take care out there today and please don’t forget to upload or send us your trip reports!
